It’s a Tuesday morning class. A client collapses mid-workout. Your trainer freezes for three seconds. Then muscle memory kicks in. She starts CPR. That course she did last month made this moment possible.

CHILDCARE

Morning tea is almost over. A three-year-old starts choking. The room goes quiet. Your educator drops to the floor, calm and focused. She’s done this in training a dozen times. This time it’s real – and she’s ready.

OFFICE

A colleague slumps forward at his desk. Everyone reaches for their phone. Except one person – who trained with First Aid Action last year. She’s already on the floor, checking his airway.

Course Overview

This nationally recognised unit covers everything required to respond to a cardiac or respiratory emergency – from the moment someone collapses to handing over to paramedics. You’ll practise on adult and infant manikins, use a real AED trainer, and work through the DRSABCD action plan until it’s instinctive.

All training and assessment aligns with current Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

Key Elements

Recognise and respond to an emergency situation
- Identify hazards, ensure safety, and assess the situation.
Perform CPR procedures
- Demonstrate 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult and infant manikin.

- Provide accurate information to emergency services.
- Complete workplace or organisation incident reports.

- Participate in debriefs.
- Reflect on own performance to identify areas for improvement.

Pre-requisites /Entry Requirements

All students completing this course must have moderate English. Further information is provided in the Student Handbook.

Enrolment

All USI information must be completed at least 3 days prior to the course to meet USI verification requirements.
Please note that the RTO Standards have changed from 1st July. A key update is the requirement to complete an Enrolment Check and identify any support needs for each student before the course starts.
This means all participants must be fully enrolled prior to attending the course.

Online Pre-Theory

Theory must be completed at least 24hrs prior to attending your class. Failure to complete theory may result in your booking being cancelled and all monies forfeited. Trainers are provided the class list detailing theory completion results the day prior to class.

Learners will gain immediate access to the theory portal upon completion of their booking and payment, refer to your confirmation email for the link (please check junk mail folders or contact us if not received).

Practical Assessment

Skills must be demonstrated working individually in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, industry validated scenarios and simulations to assess candidates’ skills and knowledge.

Please let us know if you have any medical conditions or special needs that may prevent you from getting on the floor. It is a requirement that CPR be performed for at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.

Simulated assessment environments must simulate the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment.

Performance Assessment must include:

✅ Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on:

an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, and
an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.

✅ Use a defibrillator (AED) as part of the resuscitation scenario.

✅ Respond to an emergency situation, including:

Correct hazard identification and risk minimisation.
Following DRSABCD action plan.
Safe manual handling techniques when moving or positioning manikins/patients.

✅ Communicate effectively:

Accurately conveying incident details to emergency services or a workplace supervisor.
Completing required workplace or organisation incident reports.

✅ Review the incident:

Participating in a debrief or evaluation with others.
Providing constructive feedback.
Reflecting on personal performance.

Factors to Consider

Minimum age for participants is 14 years.
14 to 17 years learners must email or bring signed under 18 years consent form.

Students attending course will be required to demonstrate their physical ability to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor, to meet the performance criteria for assessment.
