A three-year-old starts choking on a piece of fruit. The room goes quiet. Your lead educator drops to one knee – calm and certain. She applies back blows. The fruit dislodges. The child coughs and cries. Everyone breathes again.

She didn’t freeze because she’d practised this exact scenario – with a child manikin, in a setting just like yours.

Course Overview

Mandatory for all early childhood educators under the National Quality Framework, this course covers the specific emergencies that arise in childcare and education settings – with hands-on practice using child and infant manikins.

Infant, child, and adult CPR and AED use.
Choking response for infants, children, and adults.
Asthma management — including EpiPen and inhaler with spacer.
Anaphylaxis recognition and emergency response.
Bleeding, burns, and injury management.
Incident documentation and communication with families and emergency services.

Pre-requisites /Entry Requirements

All students completing this course must have moderate English. Further information is provided in the Student Handbook.

Enrolment

All USI information must be completed at least 3 days prior to the course to meet USI verification requirements.
Please note that the RTO Standards have changed from 1st July. A key update is the requirement to complete an Enrolment Check and identify any support needs for each student before the course starts.
This means all participants must be fully enrolled prior to attending the course.

Online Pre-Theory

Theory must be completed at least 24hrs prior to attending your class. Failure to complete theory may result in your booking being cancelled and all monies forfeited. Trainers are provided the class list detailing theory completion results the day prior to class.

Learners will gain immediate access to the theory portal upon completion of their booking and payment, refer to your confirmation email for the link (please check junk mail folders or contact us if not received).

Practical Assessment

Skills must be demonstrated working individually in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, industry validated scenarios and simulations to assess candidates’ skills and knowledge.

Please let us know if you have any medical conditions or special needs that may prevent you from getting on the floor. It is a requirement that CPR be performed for at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.

Simulated assessment environments must simulate the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment.

Factors to Consider

Due to the Health Training Package updating as of October 2021 – this course is now solely focused on First Aid in infants and children. It does not include the HLTAID010 Provide Basic Life Support or the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid competencies.

This unit applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.

Minimum age for participants is 14 years.
14 to 17 years learners must email or bring signed under 18 years consent form.

Students attending course will be required to demonstrate their physical ability to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor, to meet the performance criteria for assessment.
