Course Overview

HLTAID011 Provide first aid one day Course focuses on the various practical skills needed to administer first aid. First Aid Action will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to administer first aid to a casualty who has sustained an injury or illness, until the arrival of professional medical help.

Covers the skills and knowledge to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
Applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Key Elements

Pre-requisites /Entry Requirements

All students completing this course must have moderate English. Further information is provided in the Student Handbook.

Enrolment –

All USI information must be completed at least 3 days prior to the course to meet USI verification requirements.
Please note that the RTO Standards have changed from 1st July. A key update is the requirement to complete an Enrolment Check and identify any support needs for each student before the course starts.
This means all participants must be fully enrolled prior to attending the course.

Online Pre-Theory –

Theory must be completed at least 24hrs prior to attending your class. Failure to complete theory may result in your booking being cancelled and all monies forfeited. Trainers are provided the class list detailing theory completion results the day prior to class.

Learners will gain immediate access to the theory portal upon completion of their booking and payment, refer to your confirmation email for the link (please check junk mail folders or contact us if not received).

Practical Assessment –

Skills must be demonstrated working individually in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, industry validated scenarios and simulations to assess candidates’ skills and knowledge.

Please let us know if you have any medical conditions or special needs that may prevent you from getting on the floor. It is a requirement that CPR be performed for at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.

Simulated assessment environments must simulate the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment.

Performance Assessment must include –

Learners must:

Perform CPR (HLTAID009 component)
- On an adult manikin placed on the floor, for at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR (5 cycles of compressions and breaths).
- On an infant manikin, for at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR (5 cycles).
- Use of an AED (defibrillator) on adult and infant manikins.
Respond to at least two simulated first aid scenarios (these must cover different types of emergencies):
- One must be a life-threatening situation (e.g., unconscious casualty requiring CPR, severe allergic reaction, severe asthma attack, etc.).
- One must involve a non-life-threatening situation (e.g., bleeding, fracture, burn, shock, sprain/strain, diabetes, seizure, poisoning).
Provide first aid to a casualty who is:
- Unconscious, breathing normally (recovery position).
- Experiencing anaphylaxis and asthma (use of adrenaline auto-injector and inhaler with spacer).
- Bleeding and/or in shock.
- With fractures, sprains, strains, dislocations, head/neck/spinal injuries.
- With envenomation (using pressure immobilisation technique).
Demonstrate skills in:
- Conducting a casualty assessment (DRSABCD, vital signs, secondary survey).
- Using safe manual handling techniques.
- Correct infection control practices (hand hygiene, PPE, disposal of sharps).
- Communicating details of an incident to emergency services and workplace supervisor.

Documentation

Complete at least one workplace or incident report form.

Factors to Consider

Minimum age for participants is 14 years.
14 to 17 years learners must email or bring signed under 18 years consent form.

Students attending course will be required to demonstrate their physical ability to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor, to meet the performance criteria for assessment.
