Course Overview

This course covers various topics related to advanced oxygen administration, therapy, and resuscitation, as well as the use of Automated External Defibrillation (AED) equipment.

Purpose:

To equip learners with the skills and knowledge to:

Recognise and respond to respiratory and cardiac arrest.
Use advanced resuscitation techniques, including airway management and oxygen therapy.
Assist in patient monitoring and ongoing care until emergency services arrive.

Please note that this course is not available as a public course, only group bookings. The hire fee for the Oxygen tank will be added to the invoice after the course or the client may supply their own.

Pre-requisites/Entry Requirements

Pre-Requisite:

Typically, learners are expected to hold HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid)
Practical demonstrations and scenario-based assessments are included.
Knowledge questions on oxygen therapy, resuscitation guidelines, and patient monitoring.

All students completing this course must have moderate English. Further information is provided in the Student Handbook.

Enrolment

All USI information must be completed at least 3 days prior to the course to meet USI verification requirements.
Please note that the RTO Standards have changed from 1st July. A key update is the requirement to complete an Enrolment Check and identify any support needs for each student before the course starts.
This means all participants must be fully enrolled prior to attending the course.

Online Pre-Theory

Theory must be completed at least 24hrs prior to attending your class. Failure to complete theory may result in your booking being cancelled and all monies forfeited. Trainers are provided the class list detailing theory completion results the day prior to class.

Learners will gain immediate access to the theory portal upon completion of their booking and payment, refer to your confirmation email for the link (please check junk mail folders or contact us if not received).

Practical Assessment

Skills must be demonstrated working individually in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, industry validated scenarios and simulations to assess candidates’ skills and knowledge.

Please let us know if you have any medical conditions or special needs that may prevent you from getting on the floor. It is a requirement that CPR be performed for at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.

Simulated assessment environments must simulate the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment.

Performance Assessment must include:

Patient Assessment
- Conduct primary survey (DRSABCD).
- Recognise cardiac/respiratory arrest.
- Monitor vital signs and patient response.
Advanced Resuscitation Skills
- Perform CPR per ARC guidelines.
- Use bag-valve-mask (BVM) resuscitator.
- Insert/manage airway adjuncts.
- Provide effective rescue breaths.
Oxygen Therapy
- Identify when oxygen is needed.
- Select correct delivery device.
- Set appropriate flow rate.
- Monitor patient and manage oxygen safely.
Equipment Use
- Safe and correct use of resuscitation and oxygen equipment.
- Prepare and clean equipment correctly.
Scenario Management
- Respond appropriately in a realistic emergency.
- Prioritise interventions and coordinate actions.
- Work as part of a team if applicable.
Documentation and Reporting
- Record assessments, interventions, and patient outcomes.
- Communicate clearly to other healthcare personnel.

Factors to Consider

Typically, learners are expected to hold HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) as a pre-requisite.
Practical demonstrations and scenario-based assessments are included.
Knowledge questions on oxygen therapy, resuscitation guidelines, and patient monitoring.

Students attending course will be required to demonstrate their physical ability to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor, to meet the performance criteria for assessment.
